Jean-Philippe Marquis is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and director of photography based in British Columbia. His work as a director is often non-linear, contemplative and explores themes of contested geographies and resource extraction.
Jean-Philippe recently produced and directed Silvicola, a feature documentary reflecting on modern forestry and our connection/disconnection with the forest. Silvicola won the John Kastner Award at Hot Docs 2023, Best Canadian Film at Planet in Focus 2023, and received support from the Canada Council for the Arts, the BC Arts Council and the NFB.
Jean-Philippe has twelve years of cinematography experience on documentaries and television series. Broadcasters include Radio-Canada, Unis TV, Canal D, TFO and TV5. He has made short films in Palestine, Congo-Kinshasa, Cameroon and filmed intensively across Yukon and Western Canada.
He received a Leo Award for best cinematography on a documentary series (2018), is a recipient of the Hot Docs Accelerator program (2018) and received an IDRC Award for International Development Journalism (2012).
He is fully bilingual and holds degrees in journalism from Concordia University and anthropology from Université de Montréal. His skills also include video editing, location sound, drone, photography, producing and budgeting.
